Papa Claus is here!

Project summary

Finally I've just ended Papa Claus prototype. It was fun to code, really. I have learnt much about Phaser 3 framework and game design per se. It was suprisingly easy to deliver all of planned features even if they evolved during development.

Papa Claus is my first game ever and I'm really glad I decided to join Erstel's game jam. Experience gained here will make my future games probably better.

I'm sure I will continue developing this project. Powerups are planned ;)

And some explanation about jam's limitation - only red, green and white colors were allowed (and obviously their shades).

Prototype rules

In the game description I tried to keep rules description as simple as possible. Here are expanded rules with numbers.

Pre-boss stage

  • Papa starts with 30 cakes and 30 seconds
  • Stealing takes 1 second per present
  • Each present grants 3 more seconds
  • Stealing one present has 30% chance to grant 0-3 cakes
  • Stealing one present has 5% chance to grant 10 cakes
  • Stealing all presents (X key) does not grant extra cakes
  • Robbed tree will disappear after 2 seconds
  • New tree will spawn every 4 seconds
  • Max 5 trees alive are allowed
  • When one present is stolen, kids start to spawn
  • The more present are stolen, the more kids will spawn
  • Touching kids give 2 seconds penalty
  • Papa is invicible for 1 second after touching kid
  • Kids will disappear when they get a cake
  • When time is up, boss appears

Boss stage

  • Boss hass initially 100 hp
  • Papa loses 1-3 cakes on touching boss if not stunned
  • Boss loses 1 hp per stolen present
  • Every 0.5 second boss has 20% chance to shot snowball 
  • Snowballs stun Papa for 0.5 second
  • Every 3 seconds boss has 50% chance to spawn a deathmark
  • Boss rushes towards a deathmark after 1 second and will be stunned for 2 seconds
  • Shooting cakes deals 1-3 damage to boss
  • When Papa is run out of cakes, he loses
  • Papa wins when boss health goes 0

Conclusion

Some adjusting and balancing is needed. I have an idea for some powerups and debuffs. 
Concept is wide and can be adapted in other way, just not sure if I want to develop christmas-themed game further in spring or summer :D
